CORPORATE
Basic Skills Agency Welsh Annual Conference - March 2002

This was the largest event to date by Presentation Matters, the production company responsible for looking after the BSA's calendar of conferences and events. We accompanied them to Cardiff International Arena for the Welsh Annual conference where about 800 teachers congregated for an exhibition and presentation.

In contrast to previous BSA events there were no round table discussions or even a top table. All the speaking was done from the stage/ lectern. This was accompanied by video and PowerPoint presentations and there was also a large exhibition area in the main body of the arena. The presentations were given in a boxed off area also in the arena. The sound system comprised five Meyer Sound UPA-1Ps flown on the front lighting truss. Another UPA-1P either side of stage and four Meyer MPS-355s provided front-fill. None of the videos had any sub bass content so it wasn't necessary to use any subs. We provided an independent speech and background music system for the arena exhibition area.

Lapel mics (Sennheiser MKE2s on Trantec S5000s) were used on each of the speakers, with a pair of Shure MX412 goosenecks on the lectern. A lot of questions were fielded from the floor and so eight Shure handhelds were sent out with eager volunteers so the questions could be heard. A couple of JBL Control 1 speakers were placed on stage as fold-back so the speaker could hear the questions addressed to him.

This was the largest BSA event to date and they had gone as far as Australia for guest speakers. The content and the delivery of the show was of a very high standard. Three cameras meant none of the action was missed, with two screens showing both live images and presentation slides. The BSA events are always recorded for posterity and so a good quality audio mix has to be sent to the vision mixer. The production comms were tied in with the camera comms ring to allow the camera director to talk to the show caller, but the cameramen only heard the camera director's instructions.

The success of this event reflects the growing success of the Basic Skills Agency and the continued interest in their growing calendar of events.
