PCA Awards, Royal Albert Hall - September 1999
The Professional Cricket Association annual awards ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall this year, and featured some very unusual challenges. This was an event where Sound By Design had to overcome serious time constraints to bring together a large scale corporate awards ceremony and a full blown rock-and-roll show.
The sound design for the system in the Hall was a tried and tested design from Phil Wright. The time saved during the fit-up and the lack of noise testing offered by Sound By Design overcame many of the clients main time concerns for the day. We were able to completely rehearse a 1 ½ hour awards show, with video and music stings, lectern mics and cabaret without making much noise in advance at all. Once the awards show rehearsals were complete, we started a full blown rock-and-roll sound check, with artists such as Steve Harley on Vocals, Rolling Stone Bill Wyman on Bass Guitar, Ray Cooper on Percussion and Eric Clapton's drummer Henri Spinetti keeping everyone in time. A total of fourteen musicians filled the stage, and the total sound check time was 45 minutes.
Once these checks were complete, the rolling risers with the backline equipment were put to the sides of the stage and the doors opened... The show was very well received by the audience who, once the awards were complete and with the band on, all moved down to the now clear arena to dance the night away.
