BBC Proms Season 2005
This years Proms season was as busy as ever for Sound By Design. The scope of projects to which we supplied sound reinforcement support was even more diverse than in previous years - and logistically the challenges just got bigger, as the BBC undertook their first ever triple-prom day with their "Violin Day" extravaganza!
There were also developments outside the Royal Albert Hall, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's new home, Cadogan Hall used for the Proms Chamber Concerts. These have historically taken place at the Victoria and Albert Museum, but due to popular demand have been moved to the larger venue.
This years main RAH system design incorporated extra fills around the lighting truss to cover areas masked from the centre cluster by the extensive TV lighting rig as well as a new upgraded gallery delays system which historically has been utilising JBL Control 1s and is now based on Meyer Sound MPS-355 loudspeakers.
PA Projects undertaken during the season included:
- Fraser Trainer's Violin Concerto for Amplified Violin "For The Living"
- Ravi Shankar & Anoushka Shankar in Concert
- "Violin Day" with performances from Blazin' Fiddles and Lakatos
- Baaba Maal in Concert
- Michael Tippett - Symphony No 4
- Berio - Coro
The Baaba Maal concert saw the proms debut for Sound By Design's new Meyer Sound M2D line array centre cluster system. This high power concert system provided very significant reinforcement for this concert, which was very warmly received by the audience.
Sound By Design's team on the Proms continued to grow this year, with Phil Wright and Judith Etherington providing overall project management. Darren Rose project managed all of the pre- and post-prom events at RAH, while Griff Hewis project managed all of the events at the new Cadogan Hall venue. New full time Sound By Design engineers John Gale and Richard Denham were involved in many of the RAH concerts and were made to feel very welcome by the Proms team.
