Romeo & Juliet, Royal Albert Hall - June 2001
Raymond Gubbay Ltd's unique style in giving popular appeal to some of the classic operas and ballets has received wide acclaim for their production of Romeo & Juliet. The ballet, staged in the round at the Royal Albert Hall featuring the English National Ballet, was a spectacular display of dramatic choreography, lighting and sound.
'To be heard and not seen' was the brief for Sound By Design. Full enhancement of the orchestra is essential to give the production presence and to overcome the noise from the battery of moving lights above the arena. Discrete placement of microphones and 'invisible' placement of loudspeakers was an essential element to satisfy the true ballet aficionado's.
Senior Engineer Phil Wright designed and engineered the show for the 2-week run using a Midas Heritage 2000 Console and approx. 70 different capacitor microphones. The acoustic imaging set-up of the sound system, to complete the 'deception' was achieved by Phil Wright using Meyer SIM II.
Not so discrete were the Sound By Design management team as they consumed their own weight in canapés, entertaining a number of guests during several performances.
