Shostakovich by Shostakovich - May 2005
As part of the VE Day 60th anniversary celebrations, May 9th 2005 saw the Royal Albert Hall host to the St. Petersburg Academic Symphonic Orchestra in a Cinemaphonia performance of Dmitry Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony (Leningrad). Conducted by Shostakovich's son, Maxim Shostakovich, the concert incorporated a massive cinema screen at the rear of the hall to project synchronized film by director George Paradzhanov.
Sound By Design were contracted by Flux Event Design & Production to supply sound recording and reinforcement for the concert. The particularly large orchestra was recorded using a B&K Decca tree configuration, spot microphones on the wind, percussion, harp, and ambient microphones in the gallery. A mix of DDA and Focusrite preamps were used to
make a 24bit stereo DAT and multi-track hard disk recording. An instant stereo mix was made back stage, monitoring with Meyer HM-1S speakers, and we took a backup recording using a Metric Halo interface into a Mac G4 Laptop.
Speech and film sound playback was provided using our permanently installed system, comprising of flown Meyer MSL-2's and UPA-1C's along with UPM-1P choir, side and front-fills. This was also complemented with Meyer UPA-1P's to cover the stage seating area. A monitor feed of the orchestra was given to the director to allow him to hear the orchestra whilst he manually adjusted the film speed to keep synchronisation with the orchestra.
