South Northamptonshire Golden Jubilee Celebration - September 2002
An ambitious event staged late in the summer to celebrate the Queens Golden Jubilee. The venue was in a natural bowl in the centre of Towcester racecourse. With fun fair and fireworks to accompany the live music, this free event was billed as a family celebration. The line up of tribute bands was headed by 'Robbie's Rejects' with 'The Cheeky Monkeys', 'Abba Vision', 'The Village Idiots' and suitably 'Queen B' providing support. Hants FM provided the entertainment between acts.
The event provided an ideal opportunity to try out the new Meyer Sound M2D curvilinear speaker system on loan from Autograph Sales. Roger Harpum came out to supervise rigging of the ground stacks on behalf of Autograph. Unfortunately limited to only 7 mid-hi cabinets a side because of the height of the roof on the P.A. wings (we had brought a total of 16), these still provided an ideal system for the 3500 crowd. Engineer, Paul Turner, commented on the quality of the boxes. "In my opinion this is the best Meyer product yet for rock n' roll shows. The system needs a little more EQ than other Meyer products, but there is superb clarity to the vocals, and a punchier low mid-range, even when the system is being really pushed".
As with any outdoor event it's success depended heavily on the weather, and although the crowd wasn't treated to the lovely sunshine the crew had on the rig day, the rain held off and by nightfall the wind had dropped making it ideal conditions for an outdoor show.
Robbie's Rejects rocked, the fireworks provided the climax, and the good people of Towcester left entertained.
