Axis & Globe
Natural History Museum, January 2010

The project brief was to provide sound, lighting & staging for a gala event that included the staging of a 50-minute West End show musical medley with 10 principals and live 4-piece band. Sound By Design’s MD, Andy Callin who oversaw the event commented “the client was very keen to make full use of the building architecture as the stage, so we just added a basic fore stage at the foot of the main staircase and made maximum use of the building fabric”.

From initial discussions it became very clear that careful pre-production and maximising the available rehearsal time with a 6pm load in was the key to producing a slick performance with everything properly cued.  Andy commented, “we were working from an outline brief from The CBS Group who choreographed the show. None of us had seen the routines so we had an hour to set the sound & lighting cues.”

Sound By Design’s principal sound designer Phil Wright engineered the event with Jason Larcombe as lighting designer, through White Light. The technical build was managed by Darren Rose & Richard Stirzaker.

“We worked closely with Neil Kerr, the venue’s manager on this and they were very accommodating” commented Darren. “They provided us with two storage rooms at different levels to use during the day, meaning we could simply wheel-out our equipment as soon as the museum closed, maximising our rig time.”

Audi’s representative Eva Lovrics commented “It was a wonderful success with everyone's input - Greatly appreciate the team effort.”
