BBC New Year's Transmission, Somerset House - December 2007
TV coverage of New Year's Eve events by their very nature embody everything that comes with live programming. A scripted schedule can often only form the outline template with presenters coping with both the expected and the unexpected, including the vagaries of the British weather. The focus of BBC1's coverage of the 2007 celebrations was at Somerset House, which remained open to the public throughout the build and event days. On New Year's Eve, presenters located both at Somerset House and on the Embankment captured the party atmosphere of London's celebrations, interchanging between interviews with guests, the general public and live acts performing from two areas within Somerset House.
Sound By Design were contracted to provide live sound support throughout Somerset House and interface with BBC OB's throughout. Separate systems were in use for the Portico Rooms and Courtyard for performances that included Katie Melua, All Angels and Richard Streetham. Meyer Sound powered speaker systems were used exclusively for front-of-house duties with a DiGiCo D1 mixing console located in each area. All interfaces with broadcast were exclusively in the digital domain using MADI and optical links through to the OB vehicles.
